Alison Hermann, MD
Dr. Alison Hermann is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, where she serves as the Director of the Women’s Mental Health Program as well as the Clinical Director of the Psychiatry Specialty Center. She is a practicing Reproductive Psychiatrist and a leader for clinical service development and education in this field.
Dr. Hermann has overseen a large expansion of maternal mental health services at Weill Cornell Medicine and New York-Presbyterian Hospital into multiple inpatient and outpatient sites. She has integrated Women’s Mental Health training into the core clinical and didactic education for psychiatry residents and developed training experiences for other disciplines. She has invested in mentoring others in the field through supervision, career development, and scholarly activity with junior faculty members and trainees at all levels. Multiple classes of trainees have recognized her with prestigious teaching and mentoring awards.
Dr. Hermann’s research focuses on digital innovations for Women’s Mental Healthcare. Her team has developed a digital risk prediction tool for postpartum depression using a machine-learning algorithm applied to mined EHR data, a project that spawned the prize-winning venture, Iris Ob Health, Inc. This project was also recently awarded extramural funding through the National Institute of Health (NIH). Dr. Hermann is additionally developing digital symptom tracking tools that use a novel approach, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), to form deeply-phenotyped signatures of symptom trajectories in women who do and do not have reproductive depressions across the reproductive lifespan.
Dr. Hermann was an early adopter of telepsychiatry and its application to maternal mental healthcare. In the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Hermann was a leader in developing response interventions for maternal mental health and for sharing her experiences as a clinician responding to this crisis in an initial epicenter of the United States, New York City.
